Two sources, two reliability levels. Solid pins are official police records from data.police.uk (England, Wales, Northern Ireland and British Transport Police). Hollow pins are incidents reported in police appeals and news outlets across the UK — the only source available for Scotland, where Police Scotland does not publish to the national open-data feed, and a supplement elsewhere. Media-reported entries are summaries of published reporting, not official crime statistics, and cannot be compared like-for-like with the official counts — news coverage favours the most serious and high-profile cases.
Official locations are deliberately anonymised by the police to the nearest street point; media-reported incidents are placed on the nearest named locality. Pins are approximate and never show an exact address.
Where a police record or news report does not contain enough detail to categorise an incident — for example street-level police data carries no descriptive text — it is included under Other crime .
No suspects or victims are named. Where a case is active, reporting restrictions may apply and details are withheld. In an emergency call 999.
